Methods standardization in the measurement of mass-transfer characteristics in packed absorption columns
Original language description
This paper supports the drive to standardize methods used in the measurement of mass transfer characteristics (kLa, kGa, a) in packed absorption columns. Using 25 mm Pall rings as packing, Hoffmann et al. (2007) recently proposed various such methods. Weassess their recommendations in the light of the results reported by other researchers using the same type of packing in different absorption systems. Data differences between these authors are analyzed, and the reasons for them explained. On this basis, we propose absorption systems and measurement procedures capable of providing consistent data for directly measurable primary quantities (kGa, kLa, a). Hoffmann et al. (2007) attempted to measure kLa by subtracting the gas phase resistance measured bythe absorption of SO2 in lye from the total mass transfer resistance measured by the absorption of NH3 in water. However, we do not recommend this method because the dependence on the liquid load obtained by their experiments differs grea
