The distillation column design from HETP using absorption data
Original language description
A frequently used method for the distillation column design is based on the height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP) concept, which proceeds from the basic idea of the interfacial mass transfer. This physical background is peculiar not only to d istillation, but also to absorption. The latter process enables to determine partial mass trensfer coefficients kGa and kLa but under conditions that are significantly different from those in a distillation column (especially temperature). The accuracy ofHETP values obtained by the recalculation of absorption mass transfer data depends on the proper description of the effect of physical properties as well as on the relibility of the mass transfer data themselves. Suitable absorption systems for the determination of kGa and kLa are recomended and several frequently used literature correlations of the dependencies of kGa and kLa on physical properties are tested.
