Mathematical modeling of a trickle-bed biofilter
Original language description
This paper deals with mathematical modeling of a trickle-bed bioreactor used for removal of organic dyes from textile industry wastewaters. Biofiltration is a process of removing pollutants by various kinds of microorganisms, which degrade them to carbondioxide and water. In this paper mycelium of the white rot fungus is used as the biodegrading organism. The objective of this paper is to introduce a mathematical model of the biofiltration process including two-dimensional mass balances of the substrate (glucose), which enables the biofilm growth, and of the pollutant (organic dye), which is to be degraded to less toxic substance. The substances are balanced in the liquid phase and in the biofilm and the growth of the biofilm is described by an equation resulting from the biomass balance. The model was implemented in the COMSOL Multiphysics programming environment, so far obtained numerical results are shortly summarized and the next purpose of the work is laid out
