Mathematical modeling of a biotrickling filter for removal of organic dyes from wastewaters
Original language description
The objective of this paper is to present a mathematical model of the biofiltration process taking place in a trickle-bed reactor. Biofiltration is a process of removing pollutants to carbon dioxide and water by various kinds of microorganisms. In this paper, the white rot fungus is considered as the biodegrading organism for removal of organic dyes produced in textile industry from waste-waters. The model consists of an equation describing the biofilm growth in a narrow channel and of mass balances ofthe substrate in the liquid phase and in the biofilm. Simultaneously Navier-Stokes equations and continuity equation are solved to obtain the velocity and pressure field in the liquid phase. Transport of the substrate by convection and diffusion mechanisms in the liquid phase and its diffusion and consumption in the biofilm are considered. The model is implemented in the COMSOL Multiphysics programming environment and preliminary numerical results are briefly described in the paper
