Diffusion of monomers in polyethylene
Original language description
The objective of this study is the transport of low molecular weight penetrants, such as ethylene, propylene and 1-hexene, in compact polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP). Gravimetric sorption/desorption measurements were conducted in order to obtaintransport characteristics as the time-dependence of the mass of sorbed species. Sorption and desorption characteristics were measured as responses to small and large pressure steps of penetrants. Small pressure steps covered the pressure range of interest and obtained transport characteristics provided the information about the concentration dependence of penetrant diffusivity in polymer. Penetrant diffusivities in compact polyolefin films, particles or threads were estimated by means of the simple model based on Fick?s diffusion. We provide short motivation for our study from the point of view of fundamental understanding of the problem. Moreover, we discuss current state-of-the-art of this problematic and explain the sources of large
