Diffusion of penetrants in compact polyethylene
Original language description
The objective of this study is the transport of low molecular weight penetrants, such as ethylene, propylene and 1-hexene, in compact polyethylene or polypropylene. Experimental measurements of diffusion in compact polymer particles or thin films were performed gravimetrically and the measured time-evolution of the sorbed species was corrected for buoyancy effects. Polyolefins are semi-crystalline materials consisting from crystalline and amorphous phase. Additional diffusion measurements were thereforeperformed in polymer melt consisting of a purely amorphous polymer. Dynamics of gas diffusion in the sample was measured as a response to a step change of pressure. Diffusion coefficients were estimated by comparison of model and experimental curves. Dependence of diffusivity on temperature, penetrant pressure (i.e., concentration) and polymer grade were obtained. Obtained results are important not only for the industrial production of polyolefins (where diffusion affects the copolymer
