Should Preventive Maintenance be at Fixed Intervals?
Original language description
For most complex, repairable system, the expected time between failures is likely to be a decreasing function of the age of the system and its components. Many of the failures are due to ageing and hence are potential candidates for preventive maintenance. However, of there is the significant number of failures that are not age-related or it is not economical to replace parts before there is any chance of their failure, then these events present an opportunity to perform ?opportunistic? (preventive) maintenance. This paper considers some polices which can be used under these circumstances to decide which parts to replace prematurely based on expected system availability and through life cost.
