Breakage of needle-shaped particle assemblies
Original language description
The Discrete Element Method has been used for the study of breakage kinetics of needle-shaped particles under uni-axial compaction, a situation often encountered in industrial practice e.g. during the pressure filtration of crystals or tabletting. Elongated particle shape has been approximated by the multi-element approach and the fragmentation was modelled by removing bonds between elements when the local stress exceeds the bond strength. In order to allow multi-scale integration into a population balance model of particle breakage, the DEM simulation results were processed so as to obtain the daughter distribution function and the breakage probability function.
