FULL DYNAMIC MODELING OF CATION EXCHANGE MEMBRANE
Original language description
We developed a 1D dynamic mathematical model of a cation exchange membrane (CEM). The model is based on the Poisson equation and on the molar balances of cation and anion. On the outer boundaries a constant current density conditions are applied. We areable to evaluate the distribution of electric potential and concentrations across the CEM and the diffuse layers on both the diluate and the concentrate side of the membrane. We can follow the time dependent changes in membrane polarization. We are ableto do chronopotentiometric simulations and observe the transition time ? the time when cations are depleted on the diluate side of the CEM. The time dependent polarization of CEM is important in many processes such as electrodialysis or pulse electrodialysis. In future, the model will be extended to 2D and the hydrodynamic part of the problem will be added. Thus we will be able to study hydrodynamics near the membrane/solution interface and analyze its influence on the concentration pola
