N2O formation during partial lean NOx reduction by hydrocarbons over a conventional DOC catalyst
Original language description
Diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) is utilized for the oxidation of CO and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) in the diesel exhaust gas. The DOC is also able to reduce a part of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by socalled lean NOx reduction by hydrocarbons (HC-SCR) under excess of oxygen. However, a major by-product of this lean NOx reduction is N2O - a strong green-house gas (GWP=320). Even though the emitted N2O concentrations are low and the contribution of automobiles to global N2O emissions is rather minor, it is expected that N2O will be included in future automotive emission regulations.
