Sol-gel methods for the surface coating of alginate capsules and evaluation of their diffusion properties
Original language description
Micro-encapsulation is a process by which tiny solid or liquid particles are surrounded by a continuous film of material (polymers, metals, ceramics) to give core-shell microcapsules of useful properties. These microcapsules have a number of benefits such as converting liquids to solids, separating reactive compounds, providing environmental protection, improved material handling properties etc. Almost every area in the process industries could benefit from micro-encapsulation technologies. Especially in biotechnology, it can be found e.g. it the encapsulation of living cells, immobilization of enzymes, or controlled release applications. In this work we present a methodology for the fabrication of silica-coated hydrogel capsules for the encapsulationof active substances. In the first step, the internal core is formed from a calcium alginate hydrogel which provides sufficient free volume (around 99 % water) for the encapsulation and immobilization of the internal compartments, yet has
