X-ray Tomography Imaging of Porous Polyolefin Particles in an Electron Microscope

  • Original language description

Advanced models of penetrant transport and reaction in spatially three-dimensional porous polyolefin particles reconstructed from X-ray micro-tomography (micro CT) images require proper determination of particle morphology otherwise the models cannot bevalidated by experimental data. Moreover, polyolefins exhibit a relatively low absorptivity for X-rays, therefore their investigation using micro CT can be difficult. In this paper, we utilize a low-resolution micro CT built-in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and examine how the micro CT resolution and several user-selected parameters associated with the scanning/reconstruction affect the resulting particle morphology. Using samples with known morphology and independent imaging techniques (SEM) wecritically assess the performance of the micro CT device. Finally, we propose a methodology suitable for the reliable reconstruction of polyolefin particles using low-resolution micro CT.
