Wettability of alcohol-water mixtures on hydrophobic surfaces
Original language description
This project was focused on the experimental study of wettability of two strongly hydrophobic surfaces (silanized glass and Teflon) using aqueous solutions of methanol, ethanol and n-propanol in full concentration range. The mutual connection between liquid surface tension and contact angle is studied and evaluated for aqueous solutions of simple alcohols. Based on the experimental data and detailed research study of the internal structure of aqueous solutions of alcohols, we tend to claim that the dominant factor influencing the surface wettability of alcohol-water mixtures on hydrophobic surfaces is the presence of microstructures in these solutions. These mixtures have a higher contact angle when compared with a pure liquid having the same surface tension. Moreover the dynamic surface tension and wetting of alcohol-water mixtures is not time dependent and therefore the concentration changes on vapour-liquid and solid-liquid interphases could not be considered.
