Study of continuous fluidic preparation of mesoporous silica microparticles
Original language description
The classic emulsion method for the preparation of hollow porous silica microspheres from tetraethyl orthosilciate and octylamine by Kosuge, et.al. produces particles of a wide size distribution ranging from 1 to 100 micrometres or more, depending on the stirring conditions. In this work, we study the possibility of reproducing this synthesis using a continuous flow in a microfluidic system in order to reach narrower size distributions and controlled particle size by adjusting the flow and mixing conditions. By changing the thermodynamic and hydrodynamic properties in the system, it is possible to prepare hollow particles ranging from 50 nm up to tens of micrometres. Particles with a novel multi-layered morphology as well as a typical hollow core porous shell morphology have been prepared, depending on the setup of the microfluidic system. The overall throughput achieved was from 0.5 to 1 ml/min and the particle yield was from 30 to 60 percent. All of the prepared types of particles have been characterized using electron microscopy, static light scattering and nitrogen sorption.
