Selected Physico-Chemical Properties of Several Alkanes
Original language description
The first part of this chapter presents basic information about alkanes, their structures and physico-chemical properties, whereas the second part is devoted to the study of properties of four selected liquid members of the homologous series of alkanes: pentane, hexane, nonane, and decane. The results of the measurements of their density, dynamic viscosity and surface tension in the dependence on temperature are presented. The density and viscosity data treatment yielded further characteristics of the compounds under study: the coefficient of thermal expansion, rheochor, Dunstan’s parameter and thermodynamic activation parameters for viscous flow: enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy. The surface tension data were correlated by Guggenheim-Katayama-van der Waals equation and the resulting parameters of this relation were compared with those previously calculated by group contribution method.
