Impact of deposited soot on hydrocarbon oxidation in catalytic particulate filters with different coating structures investigated by SpaciMS
Original language description
This paper investigates the impact of deposited soot on the functions of catalytic filters, with a particular emphasis on the conversion of gaseous pollutants in the exhaust. Filter samples with various configurations of model Pt/Al2O3 catalytic coatings were prepared, tested, and compared. The soot filtration experiments demonstrated superior filtration efficiency in filters with at least partial on-wall. Octane oxidation was tested as a model reaction, and the experiments were conducted with clean, soot-loaded, and regenerated filter samples. The octane concentration profiles along the input and output channels were measured using SpaciMS, marking the first successful application of this technique to catalytic monolith filters reported in the literature. The results reveal that the reaction onset temperature is not affected by the presence of soot, indicating no inhibition of the octane oxidation kinetics. On the other hand, octane slip at high flow rate (in the diffusion-limited regime) increases slightly after soot loading and decreases back after the regeneration. This suggests that the deposited soot hinders the mass transfer of reactants to the active sites. Octane concentration profiles obtained using SpaciMS support this proposed mechanism. The measured profiles also reflect the spatial distribution of the catalytic coating along the filter channels, clearly highlighting any non-uniformities.
