SIMULATIONS SUGGEST A STRONG IMPACT OF SOOT STICKINESS ON CATALYTIC FILTER PERFORMANCE

  • Original language description

Increasingly stringent emission regulations combined with economic impracticality of electrical drives in cargo transport enforce the development of new emission control devices. The development is heavily dependent on modeling and simulation, the accuracy of which is sensitive to the estimated properties of the exhaust gases' components. In the present contribution, we investigate the sensitivity of a complex CFD-based model of a catalytic filter, that is, a device that combines particulate filters with catalytic converters. In particular, we varied the properties of the trapped particulate matter (soot) and observed its effect on the catalytic filter performance. The critical parameter of interest was the "stickiness" of the soot, i.e., the resistance of the soot deposits to shear. This stickiness is almost impossible to measure, but affects the spatial distribution of the trapped soot, which, in turn, affects both the catalytic filter filtration efficiency and conversion of gaseous pollutants.
