Presented – International Conference: Bucharest, Romania, 5 January 2024: PICASSOEST: USES AND ABUSES OF PICASSO IN EASTERN EUROPE, 1945-1989 In the mid-twentieth century, modern art in former Czechoslovakia occupied a precarious position. Avant-garde tendencies were challenged—and eventually banned—during the years 1938 to 1945. A subsequent anti-modernist campaign emerged in connection with the promotion of socialist realism during the 1950s. Nevertheless, many young artists in Czechoslovakia sought to engage with the legacy of modernism. In this context, Cubism and Pablo Picasso, its foremost representative, played a pivotal role. Picasso’s work was known in Czechoslovakia and, thanks to the efforts of his collector Vincenc Kramář, physically accessible. However, Picasso was not the only role model for young artists in the 1950s who aspired to reconcile the ideals of socialism with the principles of modern art. The work of Renato Guttuso was also widely recognised across Eastern Europe. Alongside Picasso, Guttuso represented an alternative vision of the politically engaged yet modern artist. This paper seeks to compare the roles of these two figures, each emblematic of different paradigms of modernity.
