Ballroom Dance Courses as a Cultural Product
Original language description
The present paper contributes to the discussion about commodification of dance. The unique Czech-Slovak phenomenon of youth ballroom dance courses is perceived as a cultural product. The author applies the theoretical approach of Pierre Bourdieu and his concept of cultural capital to find out to what extent attending ballroom dance courses is seen by their participants as an investment into their personal development. Based on long-term field research and interviews, the aim is to examine marketing strategies and pricing politics of different ballroom dance course organizers in selected localities, and to count the total cost investment.
