Shakespeare at Four Castles: Summer Shakespeare Festival in Prague, Brno, Ostrava (Czech Republic) and Bratislava (Slovakia)

  • Original language description

The chapter describes the history and dramaturgy of the Summer Shakespeare Festival in Prague, Brno, Ostrava and Bratislava. It also focuses on some key productions of the festival's 30-year history. The chapter deals with one of the most important festivals, which has been dedicated to the staging of Shakespeare's work for a long time. More than twenty years of tradition has helped the festival expand from the Prague Castle to several interesting locations in the Czech and Slovak Republics. The festival builds not only on the specific scenic environment of historical and cultural monuments, but also brings a unique experience to the audience. In addition, the chapter traces the place of Shakespeare in Czech and Slovak culture, points out that the productions presented by the festival are regularly a challenge for the creators, and the organizers try to constantly move the interpretive possibilities of Shakespeare at the castle further towards modern production trends.
