Original language description
Cationic alkyl/aryl phosphonium meso-tetratolylporphyrins aggregate in aqueous solution to form H-aggregates, J-aggregates and long-range assemblies. Ratio between monomer and various types of aggregates can be controlled by substitution in phosphonium units and by ionic strength. Porphyrin monomers associate with calf thymus DNA and oligonucleotides. The large size of the meso-substituents prevents intercalation between base pairs.
