    Effect of Oxygen on the Mn-Co Ferromagnetic Coupling

    The paper describes the study of the effect of oxidation on the magnetic coupling between Mn and Co atoms in ultrathin Mn films deposited on fcc Co(001). The magnetic map has been investigated through tight-binding linear-muffin-tin scheme within generalized gradient approximation of the density functional. The calculations indicate that oxygen tends to destabilize the ferromagnetic Mn-Co coupling in favour of an antiferromagnetic coupling found by experiment when the oxygen is added. Nevertheless, the(1x1) structure observed do not seem to be the most stable one. We speculate that a disordered oxidized Mn-rich MnCo surface alloy might explain the experimental findings.

    Práce popisuje studium vlivu oxidace na magnetickou vazbu mezi atomy Mn a Co v ultratenkých vrstvách Mn nanesených na Co(0001). Magnetický diagram byl studován pomocí metody těsné vazby se zobecněným gradientovým přiblížením pro funkcionál hustoty. Výpočty naznačují že kyslík má tendenci destabilizovat feromagnetickou vazbu Mn-Co ve prospěch antiferomagnetické vazby nalezené po oxidaci experimentálně. Nicméně, pozorované (1x1) struktury se nezdají být nejstabilnějšími. Uvažujeme, zda neuspořádaná oxidovaná povrchová slitina MnCo by mohla vysvětlit experimentální pozorování.
