    N,N' -dicyclohexylcarbodiimide/base promoted esterification of carboxylic acids containing .alfa.-halogen atom(s) gave low yields of products when performed in a solvent. On the other hand, high yields of esters were obtained, when the same esterification was performed without both the solvent and base. (This method was shown to have a general applicability.)
