Oxidation of the B12 and CB11 icosahedral anions
Original language description
The best known among the boron analogs of aromatic hydrocarbons are the three-dimensionally aromatic closo icosahedral cages B12H122− (dodecaborate dianion), CB11H12− (1-monocarbadodecaborate anion) and the three isomers of C2B10H10 (1,2-dicarbadodecaborane or o-carborane, 1,7-dicarba-dodecaborane or m-carborane, and 1,12-dicarbadodecaborane or p-carborane). This chapter deals with a particular aspect of the solution chemistry of the mentioned dianion and the monoanion, namely their oxidation–reduction interconversion with radicals produced by the removal of a delocalized electron from the cage.
