Insulin-like hormone derivatives in physiology and disease
Original language description
Peptide hormones of the insulin family (insulin, IGF-1 and IGF-2), together with their receptors and binding proteins, represent a complex protein system that plays important roles in the development and growth of the organism and in the regulation of the overall metabolic balance. Deregulation of this system can cause serious health complications ranging from the development of cancer, neurological diseases to diabetes mellitus. Our laboratory is involved in the synthesis and characterization of insulin-like hormone derivatives to study their interaction with receptors and to develop new compounds that could find application in the treatment of insulin and IGF-related diseases. We will present our results in the development of insulin derivatives with altered specificity towards receptors for insulin, IGF-1 and IGF-2, and the biological properties of peptides derived from IGF-2 precursors. An overview of our activities in the field of development of derivatives of biologically active peptides from the insulin-like family will be presented.
