Neurosteroids for neuroscience-related research
Original language description
Neurosteroids are endogenous compounds that are synthesized and act in the central nervous system from cholesterol. Neurosteroids are not steroid hormones In contrast, they can produce rapid effects on neuronal excitability and synaptic function that involve direct or indirect modulation of neurotransmitter-gated ion channels, or voltage-gated ion channels, or G-protein coupled receptors. The research group’s expertise lies in the design, synthesis, and development of steroids with neuroprotective properties. Currently, our targets are steroidal modulators for NMDA, GABA(A), GPCR, and glycine receptors and their possible interactions. The overview of the therapeutic potential of neurosteroids, our current projects, and synthetic methods available for neuroscience research for potential collaboration will be presented.
