Hydrolysis of Nitriles to Carboxylic Acids

  • Original language description

The biocatalytic hydrolysis of nitriles to carboxylic acids is catalyzed by either a nitrilase or a bienzymatic cascade system comprised of a nitrile hydratase and an amidase. Using the same enzymes, amides can be obtained as side products (by nitrilases) or as intermediates (by nitrile hydratases). The tendency to form amides is characteristic of some nitrilases and depends also on the substrate structure, a bulky or an electrophilic group enhancing the turnover of nitrile into amide.
