Calibration of AE sensors using time reversal method
Original language description
So far, a calibration of acoustic emission sensors (and ultrasonic sensors in general) was possible either by a reciprocal calibration proposed by Hatano or by using an already calibrated reference sensor or vibrometer. These methods are however applicable only in laboratory conditions and require a special test specimen. Their results are only approximately transferable to practice, since the frequency response of sensors will change with bonding conditions and type of medium they are attached to. Thepaper shows a method of on-site calibration based on reciprocal calibration and using the time reversal method. The method was tested on a airplane wing flange specimen with six sensors attached to it. Initial experiments show promising results with lowvariability. Free boundary response of used sensors was measured by vibrometer and comparison of results shows some common features as expected.
