IR laser ablation of high boiling elements (C, Mo, Ta, W and Re)
Original language description
Pulsed IR lasers were employed to irradiate high boiling elements, such as C, Mo, Ta, W and Re, in high vacuum. The ablation yield, given in terms of removed mass per pulse, was investigated using a ns laser at intensities of the order of 10(10) W/cm(2) and a sub-ns laser operating at about 10(15) W/cm(2). The produced plasma in high vacuum was studied by the time-of-flight measurements of emitted ions. The plasma-accelerated particles can be deposited and implanted on a near substrate to form a very adherent thin film useful for applications involving high temperatures and hard materials.
