Residual Stress Measurements in the Vicinity of the Butt Weld on the Spherical Storage Tank
Original language description
The identification of the residual stress distribution is an important part of the analysis for the evaluation of life time of steel structures and for an estimation of their critical defect size. Stresses bring about local deformation in weld area and influence properties and behaviour of these structures during service. In this paper the results of strain/stress measurements in the vicinity of the butt weld on the spherical storage tank by neutron diffraction are presented. The storage tank was made of C-Mn unalloyed steel of the strength of ≈ 430 MPa. The specimen in the form of a plate with the dimensions of 100x145x15 mm3 (width x length x thickness). The measurements revealed maximum residual stresses on the level of 300 MPa, 150 MPa and 200 MPa in the longitudinal, transversal and normal direction, respectively.
