Degradation of pharmaceutical residues in water with pulsed corona discharges generated directly in water by sub-microsecond high voltage pulses(HAKONEXIV)
Original language description
Předneseno na:International Symposium on High Pressure Low Temperature Plasma Chemistry/14./ Zinnowitz,DE,21.09.2014-26.09.2014 Large volume corona discharges were investigated for their potential to degrade pharmaceutical residues in water. Discharges were generated directly in water and the efficacy of the method was tested for seven pharmaceuticals that are known to be problematic for water purification (diclofenac, ibuprofen, ethinylestradiol, carbamazepine, diatrizoate, diazepam, trimethoprim). Degradations of 45% - 99% were found for treatment times of 15 - 66 minutes, depending on the individual compound. We further investigated basic plasma chemical processes which occur during and follow the discharges in water, especially focusing on the formation of hydroxyl radicals, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, and reactive nitrogen species. These processes were studied for the degradation of phenol, which was used as chemical model system for different reaction pathways.
