Plasma Gasification and Pyrolysis
Original language description
The most widely used treatment of waste is thermal processing such as incineration. The alternative environmentally friendly process treated in this book is based on thermal plasma technology which is a very flexible tool because it allows to operate in a wide temperature range with almost any chemical composition of waste and chemicals needed for processing this waste. It allows the conversion of organic waste into energy or chemical substances as well as the destruction of toxic organic compounds in a scenario that for each specific type of waste can be considered optimal, both in terms of energy efficiency and environmental safety. The increasingly stringent legislation on treatment of waste streams and the limitations of conventional technologies render plasma technologies more and more attractive.nnThe driving force behind the book is to give priority to environmental quality at affordable cost and using innovative thermochemical conversion (gasification and pyrolysis) technologies to contribute to sustainable development and circular economy in which waste is managed as a resource.nnThe book is intended as a work of tertiary literature. As such it contains digested knowledge in an easily accessible format. It contains neither research literature (primary literature) nor review articles summarizing original papers (secondary literature). The content therefore consists of established information in this field. The level of contributions is such that a master student can benefit from contributions relevant for the specific area of his/her research and at a later stage from contributions that are not in his or her area of expertise. Contributions will start at a level that is appropriate and accessible for all early-career researchers and scientists from related areas looking for material contextual to their own subject-matter and should develop to the most appropriate level of advanced research.
