Altered expression pattern of SLAM family receptors on pathological B cells of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia

  • Original language description

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a neoplastic diorder characterized by the clonal expansion of malignant B cells which accumulate in the bone marrow and peripheral blood. CLL B cells are strongly dependent on external signals from the microenvironment. Unless proliferation and survival signals are obtained, CLL cells usually undergo spontaneous apoptosis. Adhesion molecules are critical for the homing and retention of CLL cells in tissue compartments such as the bone marrow and secondary lymphatic tissues where microenvironment siutable to provide survival signals is present. Moreover, growth and survival signals provided to the CLL cells are largery contact-dependent.
