GABAergic Interneurons in the Brain - Their Role and Detection by Wavelet Transform
Original language description
Gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the human brain. Alterations in GABA level are associated with a variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders. GABA and glycine are considered typical neurotransmitters with an inhibitory postsynaptic effect. Unlike inhibitory neurones, excitatory interneurons characteristically release glutamate. Noninvasive in vivo measurement of GABA is hindered by its low concentration and the presence of overlapping resonances. Wavelet-based methods, however, enhance the identification of interneuron subtypes and their functional roles in neural circuits, providing deeper insights into brain dynamics and sensory processing. In this paper, we compare different approaches based on the detection of GABAergic interneurons and discuss their roles and functioning to determine brain processes under normal or pathophysiological conditions.
