Original language description

The fact that English has become a new lingua franca seems to be expressly granted today; we doubt to find anyone nowadays who has not ever heard of or noticed the language?s growing dominance in many spheres of our lives. English thus has achieved the status of the so-called global language which means that it has developed and fulfills a special role or function accepted in many countries. From the point of the language?s ?globality?, the contribution discusses some aspects of the current position ofEnglish as the most ?prestigious? form of communication within the field of academy. The aim is to outline some interesting trends and tendencies in the use of English as the world?s predominant language in most scientific domains such as research and scholarship from the perspective of both global and local - Czech - researcher.

Pozice angličtiny jako současné lingua franca se zdá být nezpochybnitelnou a dostatečně pevnou. Příspěvek se soustředí na vybrané aspekty tohoto stavu, a to zejména v jedné z prestižních oblastí - akademické angličtině, respektive na užití tohoto jazykajako nezbytného a nutného nástroje komunikace. Akademická angličtina jako lingua franca je na jedné straně sjednocující a v podstatě i nezbytnou platformou pro výměnu informací, na straně druhé lze uvažovat i o fenoménu ?angličtiny jako Tyrannosaurus rex? - jak ji chápe SWALES (1997) a HYLAND (2006).
