Many indigenous groups in Mexico are currently undergoing an intensive social and political mobilization whereby indigenous national consciousness is intentionally or unintentionally fostered. The Purhepechas of central Michoacan are a good example of this process. A number of political groupings and movements in this region are vying for the support of the common population by postulating alternative visions of group identity and in-group - out-group political and social relations. In our paper based on our fieldwork in Mexico we will present fresh findings on the recent developments in the Purhepechan area within the context of the theories of globalisation and ethnicity.

Řada indiánských skupin v Mexiku prochází v současnosti procesem revitalizace tradiční kultury a posilování kolektivní identity. Purépečové jsou příkladem úspěšného nacionalistického hnutí. Různá hnutí a organizace formulují vlastní vize kolektivní identity a politických a sociálních vztahů. V naší práci představujeme výsledky posledních terénních výzkumů v Mexiku a interpretujeme purépečský nacionalismus v kontextu teorií etnicity a globalizace.
