Academic Discourse and the Genre of Research Article
Original language description
The study reports on an empirical research of the genre of research article with respect to language variation in the genre. It is based on a corpus of 250,000 words. The framework for the study is a Hallidayan conception of (i) language as social semiotic and (ii) the structure of the semantic system. It also draws on a Swalesian conception of Genre Analysis. RAs are studied in their central rhetorical dimension and the aim of the study is threefold. Using insights from functional and rhetorical approaches to discourse and genre analysis the aim is to develop a comprehensive functional synthesis that outlines the key communication strategies contributing to the rhetorical make-up of the genre.
