Im Artikel wird der Begriff "Emotionalität" definiert, der besonders in der germansitischen Forschungen lange Zeit vernachlässigt wUrde. Es wird darunter das ganze im Text enthaltene emotionale Potenzial verstanden, d.h. der Ausdruck von Emotionen, das Sprechen über emotionen und das Hervorrufen von Emotionen. Die einzelnen Aspekte der Emotionalität werden an Beipielen der Figurenrede aus dem Roman Spieletrieb von Juli Zeh illustriert.
