Facework and relational work in English as a lingua franca - a preliminary constrastive study of TripAdvisor responses
Original language description
This article reports on a pilot study investigating possible differences and similarities in facework and relational work practices between L1 English and ELF (English as a Lingua Franca) discourse. Anchored in an interactional socio-pragmatic paradigm, the study explores restaurant-owners’ public responses to negative customer reviews posted on the TripAdvisor website. The pilot study suggests that the observed differences in facework and relational work practices may stem partly from different levels of linguistic (lexical, syntactic) competence.
