Original language description
Guembelia kidderi is an epilithic subantarctic moss showing an amphiatlantic distribution pattern. It occurs on South Georgia and all islands in the Kerguelen Biogeographical Province except Heard Island, and also extends to Tristan da Cunha in the south-cool-temperate zone (Ochyra and Hertel 1990). The record of the species from the Antarctic (Muñoz and Pando 2000) is based upon misdetermination (Ochyra, Lewis Smith et al. 2008) and the report from Ascension Island in the middle Atlantic Ocean(Muñoz 1999) is not confirmed by the citation of voucher specimens.
