Learning Styles in Computer Science Education

  • Original language description

Dynamic changes in the knowledge, skills and competences of employees are placing increasing demands on education and the tertiary sector. Particularly in the field of IT and digital literacy, the development of education is very important. Increasingly, distance and blended forms of learning are playing an important role. Experience and research show that distance forms of learning are more challenging for students than face-to-face teaching. The preparation and development of appropriate learning materials can motivate and help students in their studies. Different methods and learning styles suit students. This paper describes a survey in which learning style preferences were investigated using the VARK questionnaire. The research was conducted in the bachelor’s program of Applied Computer Science and in the bachelor's program of Economics at two universities. The aim of the research was to find out whether preferences of learning styles differ by field of study and which styles are more preferred by students. Another aim was to find out whether these forms significantly affect learning and achievement. The results show that most students do not prefer one particular learning style. Rather, students prefer a multimodal learning style.
