Protection of buildings against mine gas released from the subsoil
Original language description
Mine gas, in which the explosive methane is a prominent component, is present above the ground typically in undermined areas, especially where underground mining has been abandoned. This concerns old mines which are not ventilated and mine gas penetratesthrough the permeable overburden layers to the ground. The Czech standard ČSN 73 0039 defines an undermine area as an area within the reach of the effects of underground mining. Emanation of mine air with its explosive methane content from the ground poses serious hazards to the health and safety of humans as well as to property. This problem is not entirely new, historical sources exist documenting it also in the past. The oldest known written document where mine gas outburst is mentioned is dated 1852 (Municipal Archives of Ostrava). A number of uncontrolled mine gas leakage events have been recorded since then. The hazard stems from the fact that a methane/air mixture may be explosive or flammable. A methane/air mixture is explosive
