Original language description

Council Directive 96/82/EC on the control of major-accident hazards involving dangerous substances (so-called SEVESO II Directive) is aimed at the prevention of major accidents involving dangerous substances and the limitation of their consequences for man and the environment. In the light of recent industrial accidents in Baia Mare/Romania and Enschede/Netherlands and following studies on carcinogens and substances dangerous for the environment, the validity of SEVESO II Directive needs to be extendedin order to achieve its goals.
