A Case Study of Smoke Layer Interface Assessment During an Airport Hall Fire

  • Original language description

The present period in time is characterized by the intensive development of tourism. One of the specific places related to transport is the airport concourse, where there is an increased concentration of people. In the event of a fire, panic and significant danger to persons may occur in these areas due to smoke accumulating under the ceiling structure and gradually engulfing the airport concourse. Several calculation techniques are currently available for smoke layer interface assessment. Among the most important are techniques according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. However, these international techniques are not directly applicable in the Czech Republic. This was the reason for the creation of new calculation technology according to the Czech Technical Standard (CSN). The case study applies the CSN calculation technique to determine the smoke layer interface for the airport concourse area of Leoš Janáček Ostrava Airport in the Czech Republic and compares the results with ISO, NFPA and CFAST zone fire model techniques. The results were compared using the RMSE (root mean square error) statistical method. The ISO calculation technique was chosen as the benchmark. The largest deviation between the techniques in relation to the ISO standard was 1.07 and the smallest deviation of the newly developed CSN technique was 0.06. The deviations can be assessed as acceptable and the new CSN technique as promising. In the future, CSN calculation techniques will also be verified experimentally.
