The paper deals with experimental methods employed in gearbox noise and vibration testing during past 10 years. There are two kinds of tests based on the gearbox run-up/coast down and on the steady state rotation. The first one benefits from the frequency domain approach while the second one is based on the averaging in the time domain. Frequency spectra measured at the gearbox run-up give information on the extensive structural resonance. The time domain averaged signals inform designers on the dynamicforce acting between teeth in mesh
