Stability and bifurcation analysis of periodically excited rotors supported by hydrodynamic bearings of non-circular cross section
Original language description
Properties of hydrodynamical bearings depend on the shape of their cross section. A correctly designed form of the bearing gap increases the stability limit and enables the rotor systems to operate at higher speed. Fluid film bearings are usually accommodated in the model systems by means of nonlinear force couplings. Determination of the components of the bearing forces arrives at solving a Reynolds' equation that describes the pressure distribution in the oil layer. In short bearings the solution canbe expressed in a closed form. For the case of long non-circular bearings a new numerical approach has been developed. As the pressure function is 2p periodic, it is approximated by a finite number of terms of a Fourier series. The Fourier coefficients are calculated by means of a trigonometric collocation method which requires to solve a set of linear algebraic equations. To avoid singularity of the coefficient matrix calculation of the Fourier coefficients is carried out by application
