Application of a cavitation algorithm on investigation of kinematically excited imbalanced rotors supported by short bearings with a central groove

  • Original language description

An important factor that influences properties of hydrodynamical bearings is a vapour cavitation. It represents a complex of physical processes that take place in the bearing gap due to boiling of the oil and liberation of the gases dissolved in it if the pressure drops below a critical level ( approximately pressure of saturated oil vapour at given temperature ). The observations carried out by Zeidan and Vance proved that pressure of the medium in cavitated regions remained approximately constant. After increase of the pressure the vapour bubbles collapse and the gas phase is immediately changed into a liquid one. Results of the research carried out by both investigators imply that a vapour cavitation reduces load capacity of the bearings. But on theother hand the cavitation decreases friction in the bearing gap, energy losses, resistance against the rotor rotation, and heating of the lubricant and therefore it is not always undesirable.
