    Lateral vibration of rotors can be significantly reduced by inserting damping devices between the shaft and the casing. To achieve optimum compromise between attenuation of the oscillation amplitude and magnitude of the forces transmitted through the coupling elements between the rotor and its housing the damping effect must be controllable. This is enabled by application of the dampers lubricated by magnetorheological fluid. Their damping force can be controlled by the change of intensity of the magnetic field in the lubricating layer. To investigate lateral vibration of rotors supported by short magnetorheological squeeze film dampers using computational simulations, a new numerical procedure has been developed and is presented in this paper. The rotors are excited by centrifugal forces produced by the discs unbalances and by oscillation of their foundation plate.
