The paper shows the requirements for the use of efficient iterative solvers and parallel high performance computing for solving linear systems, which arise from large scale 3-D finite element (FE) analysis of problems of elasticity and thermo-elasticityin geomechanics. We also summarize our experience and results relating to the use of problem decomposition iterative methods.
