The contribution assesses the present underground mining of hard and brown coal and lignite in the Czech Republic. It characterises particular mining companies and describes some modern technologies used in mining operations. To them primarily means of mechanisation for the exploitation of thick flat seams belong. In the conclusion an outlook for the underground coal mining in the Czech Republic in the first years of tthis century is presented.
